The Knotties was a concept developed as a potential pilot episode for a children’s television series. I was brought on to translate the creator’s script and vision into the visual characters and world, developing the lovable Knotties—little rope figures brought to life by a lightning strike—and the whimsical shed environment where their adventures unfold. At the heart of the concept were themes of teamwork, creativity and resourcefulness. The visuals shown here are from the first iteration of the project, developed as a storybook to explore the characters, world and visual direction.

Hairoes

HAIROES is a comedic animated concept set in Fringe City, a world where hair is the heart and soul of society. The story follows hair-stylist crime fighter BLONDE and his ‘kurlrate’ sidekick GOLDIE ROCKS as they battle villains determined to disrupt the city’s obsession with perfect hair. Funded in conjunction with Nickelodeon and Screenwest, I co-developed and co-directed the project from script to screen, contributing to the character design, world-building, backgrounds and animation, alongside a post-production team. The film was awarded Best Short Animation at the WA Screen Awards 2010 and received an Honourable Mention for Festival Best Animation at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival 2011.

What a debacle Freddy Farkle

Freddy is an animated short film based on a charming story written by a friend, which inspired me to bring its quirky characters and humour to life. Set in the peaceful neighbourhood of Cherry View Lane, the story follows the hapless Freddy as his poor time management and chaotic lifestyle create a series of increasingly amusing problems. Working closely with the writer, I directed and developed the visual concept for the film, overseeing the character and visual design before working with the animation and post-production team to bring the story to screen. The film was further brought to life through the wonderful narration of Barry Humphries.

Dibbleys Designs

Dibbleys Designs was a comic strip I co-created with another artist, inspired by classic newspaper comics such as Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts. Set in the world of 1990s graphic design, the strip humorously explored the everyday trials, workplace politics and social dynamics between designers, employers and clients. Created as a light-hearted satire of working life in the design industry, the project was as much fun to create as it was to bring its characters and situations to life.

IT Help Desk

A fun and playful comic strip exploring the familiar IT frustrations that can come with starting a new job. Developed from a supplied script, the project was an opportunity to translate everyday workplace scenarios into an engaging visual narrative, using humour and relatable characters to bring the experience to life.

Cultural Adaptation and Diversity

I was contracted by a university to create two animated shorts designed to support international students transitioning to study and live in Australia. The animations aimed to provide a welcoming and inclusive introduction to a new culture while helping students feel supported as they settled into their new environment. To represent diversity without singling out or excluding particular cultures, I developed a visual language using vibrant rainbow colours, abstract characters and non-specific representations of people and gender, creating an inclusive experience that avoided cultural bias.
